Have You Noticed Small White Spots on Your Arms or Legs? Here’s Wh

Small white spots on the arms and legs are most commonly caused by **idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis **(IGH), a benign condition characterized by small, flat, smooth patches of reduced pigment.  These spots appear because cumulative sun exposure and natural aging damage or deactivate melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin color, in localized areas.

Key factors contributing to these spots include:

  • Sun Damage: Years of UV exposure gradually deplete melanin production in sun-exposed areas like the forearms and shins.

  • Aging: The condition becomes more prevalent with age, affecting between 50% and 80% of adults over 40.

  • Genetics: Some individuals are inherently more prone to developing these hypopigmented spots due to their genetic makeup.

While other causes like tinea versicolor (a fungal infection) or vitiligo (an autoimmune condition) can also cause white spots, IGH is the most frequent reason for small, scattered spots on the limbs that do not tan.
